Scanning Tunneling Microscope: JohanneumSTM

In 12th grade at high school I was asked to join the year's Physics project class and to help write a data retrieval and visualization tool for a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) they were going to build. As a separate project for Arts class, where we were tasked to create advertisements, I created this short animated video which you can see above. Sadly, the microscope short-circuited before we were able to retrieve any useful data from it. Screenshots of the software depict outcomes of the built-in scan simulation.

If I were to do this all again today, I would probably just write a Python script and do the plotting with matplotlib.
